Nintendo amiibos: cool collectibles or just a huge pain in the ass?

Here’s the thing that I absolutely love about Nintendo: they make really cool collectibles that their fans absolutely adore. Now here’s the thing I hate about them: they make the things so damn hard to acquire! Hell, they announced a Collector’s Edition for The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3DS with an uber-sweet Skull Kid figurine and the damn thing was sold out everywhere within 10 minutes of the announcement. Come on, now. You clearly have a larger fan base than 100 people.

And now there’s the amiibos — a blatant rip-off of the proven Skylanders/Disney Infinity formula, though admittedly, amiibos are made of a much-higher quality. The problem with the amiibos is that Nintendo releases small runs for the lesser-known characters and the online scalpers immediately gobble them up.
